The Epic Pass will provide unlimited and unrestricted access to all 42 resorts owned by Vail Resorts, which in Colorado include Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Crested Butte. Plastic cards will remain an option for those who prefer them. New for next season, skiers and riders will be able to store their “mobile pass” on their smartphones, which will be scanned automatically at the lift without having to remove them from a pocket or backpack. When this season’s passes went on sale a year ago, they were $841 and $626, respectively, an increase of 7% over the previous year. The following year, Vail Resorts slashed those prices by 20%, but many skiers later said that led to overcrowded slopes in the 2021-22 season. The Epic prices announced in a news release Tuesday are still cheaper than they were in 2020-21 when they were $979 and $729, respectively. A year ago, Alterra announced Ikon prices for the current season on March 3 and Vail Resorts announced Epic pricing on March 21. Summer lift access applies to the summer months prior to the winter season covered by a pass, and begins when resorts open for summer operations. Note: Due to the pandemic, many resorts have modified operations and may require reservations. So if you live in North America, now’s the time to grab a new shell or bib if you need it, wax those skis, or take a backcountry safety course. It’s by no means a record to see ski resorts open this early - at least not in Colorado, where some resorts have historically opened as early as the first week of October - but it is impressive. Last weekend, a Banff resort had its earliest opening weekend in history. And this weekend, several other mountains are following suit. Ski season doesn’t usually start in October, but for some resorts, it will. Think October is just for hiking, leaf-peeping, and camping? Think again, because snow is falling and ski resorts are open.
